Where my focus should be
This time of year can become overwhelmingly busy. From holiday get-togethers, to school concerts to end of the year deadlines, it can be hard to find any date on the calendar where you don’t have something to do or somewhere to be. While it is easy to get caught up in the hectic holiday season, I remind myself why I do what I do, who I do it all for and really where my focus should always be — my family.
My family is my foundation. Carlie and Weston remind me who I am beyond my title. When work or home life schedules become demanding, those are the people who keep me grounded. As a husband, father, and leader of your cooperative, there are always decisions to make and responsibilities to carry. But my family provides the perspective that there is more to life than the next meeting, deadline or challenge. I’m sure you can relate to this as well.
My family is my reason to make the most of every moment. I don’t think I have to bring to your attention that life moves fast. It seems like it was just yesterday that my son was born. But, in reality, we are many years past that moment. The month of November and the holiday season are good reminders that time moves quickly. The school performance, family dinner or Thanksgiving gathering might seem like just another item on an already busy calendar — but those are the moments that truly matter and the ones that ultimately become the memories we hold on to. Being present is one of the greatest gifts we can give our loved ones.
My family is what I am most thankful for. This is the time of year where we typically focus on our blessings. While that is good and what we should do, our focus year-round should be on our families and how thankful we are to have them. A busy schedule can make us focus on what still needs to be done, rather than what we already have.
At Southwest, we know that behind every meter is a family, and every family has its own busy schedules, traditions and moments that matter most. It is an honor to serve our members and help power the homes where those moments happen. I challenge you, though, to share these thoughts with your loved ones this season. Let them know that they ground you. Share with them that they are the reason for you to slow down and be present. Most of all, make sure your family knows that they are your greatest blessing.
